What It’s Like to Be a Black Man Working in the Wine Industry


Do you ever wonder what it might feel like to be a Black man working in wine, an overwhelmingly white- and male-dominated industry? You may not see me — or people who look like me — very often. Black professionals make up just 2 percent of the drinks industry, despite accounting for more than 13 percent of the U.S. population. So I’m here to tell you: Even though I stand out, I often feel invisible.

As the World Shelters in Place, Rare Beer Lovers Raid Their Collections

The other night, I did something unusual: I opened a 2009 bottle of 3 Fonteinen Oude Geuze.

The weird part wasn’t that I chose a spontaneously fermented beer from Belgium: Although I do mostly consume Czech lagers, I happily drink most styles. But that particular beer from my own cellar was one that dated from before the 2009 disaster that shuttered one of Belgium’s favorite lambic breweries for several years.

There’s one aspect of Disney properties that visitors tend to overlook: There are epicurean delights all over the parks — if you know how to find them. Epcot is full of elevated dining experiences like Monsieur Paul, which serves nouvelle cuisine and an extensive list of French wines. There’s even a restaurant at The Grand Floridian, Victoria & Albert’s, that serves a nine-course degustation menu with wine pairings. The restaurant is so exclusive that it takes six months or more to get a reservation.
